Judy Myers
Judy Myers is serving her third term on the Westchester County Board of Legislators representing Rye, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, and parts of New Rochelle and Harrison.
As a 28-year Town of Mamaroneck resident, Judy’s work represents her deep understanding of the needs and expectations of 7th District residents.
Judy has fought to keep taxes under control in the face of rising medical and retirement costs. She voted for the 2011 County budget that lowered taxes by 2.2%, cut spending by over $30 million, and trimmed the county workforce by 10% without layoffs. She voted to override the County Executive’s line-item vetoes that would have increased taxes. And she continues to be a staunch advocate for greater regional planning, inter-municipal cooperation, and open government.
Since the 2007 floods that devastated parts of Westchester, Judy has been at the forefront of the county’s flood-mitigation efforts. Judy serves on the Flood Action Task Force and secured $4.5 million in county funds for area flood control projects, including stormwater-related improvements in Rye and Mamaroneck. Her stormwater management legislation, creating a Stormwater Advisory Board, passed successfully and is setting the stage for stormwater management improvements on a county-wide basis.
Judy is also dedicated to improving public health. She championed legislation requiring chain restaurants to post calorie counts, making Westchester County one of the few areas in the country requiring this important public information.
As Chair of the Family, Health and Human Services Committee in 2006 and 2007, Judy tackled a wide range of critical issues, from childcare to AIDS to saving the Westchester Medical Center. She increased access to quality childcare through a county scholarship program that had a successful run for four years before being cut out of the budget in 2011.
Judy sits on the Westchester County Board of Health, co-ordinating public health initiatives between the Board of Legislators and County Health Department. She also is a member of the Joint Review Committee at the Westchester Medical Center, which reviews the fiscal and operational health of the medical center in Valhalla.
Judy has pushed for more open space and recreational opportunities in lower Westchester. She has been a proponent of the county’s plan to clean up and acquire David’s Island in New Rochelle as a county park. She is helping to shape the future of Playland through her work on the County Executive’s Playland RFP Review Committee. Judy is also working with local advocates to open the Westchester Children’s Museum at Playland.
To ease the playing field shortage in Larchmont and Mamaroneck, Judy successfully secured $1.5 million to help build a new athletic field that opened in 2008 in Larchmont’s Flint Park. She was also instrumental in securing money for the renovation of City Park in New Rochelle.
As the Majority Whip for the Democratic caucus, Judy serves on each of the legislature’s major committees, including the Budget and Appropriations Committee, to carry out the majority caucus’ legislative priorities.
Judy is a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Westchester- Putnam, and sits on on a number of community boards, including the Rye YMCA; the Mamaroneck CAP Center; and the Community Advisory Board of the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound. She is an active member of the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Summit; RADAR; the League of Women Voters; and the Westchester Women’s Agenda.
She is married to Ira Schwartz, has two grown children, and two golden retrievers.
