League of Conservation Voters Endorses Judy Myers for County Legislature

The New York League of Conservation Voters has endorsed Judy Myers for re-election.

Judy has a strong record of environmental action during her three years on the County Board, largely related to responsible conservation of the Long Island Sound:

  • Judy helped secure federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to offset the costs of the bionutrient removal project, a mandataed endeavor to clean up the Long Island Sound. She pushed for the New Rochelle Wastewater Treatment plant overhaul and expansion to move forward at the same time, allowing for increased efficiencies.
  • Under Judy’s stewardship as one of three New Rochelle legislators, the cleanup of Davids Island has been completed. Though largely federally-funded, Judy secured necessary county dollar contributions for this project. Resident-generated ideas about future green uses for the island can now be considered, such as wind farms, solar grids, wildlife conservancies and passive parks.
  • Judy led a successful County resolution against the Broadwater natural gas liquification plant in the middle of the Long Island Sound due to its dangerous and precedent-setting negative use of this public waterway.
  • As a three-year member of the County’s Flood Task Force, Judy co-authored legislation establishing a Storm Water Advisory Board to help in the execution of a new Storm Water Management Plan for the County, including funding for flood mitigation measures.
  • Judy worked to pass a new law aimed at reducing idling of motor vehicles; a new purchasing policy that would increase the County’s commitment to hybrid/alternative energy vehicles; legislation to increase the recycling of plastic bags and film; and the bonding necessary to retool Yonkers’ Materials Recycling facility to provide expanded plastics recycling throughout Westchester beginning June 1 of this year.
  • Judy voted to override the County Executive’s vetoes of this year’s budget, saving three critical environmental planning positions that the County Executive had slated for lay-off; providing critical County funding for Cornell Cooperative Extension; and saving jobs at Hilltop Hanover Farm.
  • Through Judy’s participation as a voting member of the County Board of Health, she is able to oversee petroleum bulk storage compliance in the County, as well as septic regulations and compliance.
  • Judy continues to advocate against the development of the Marcellus Shale without further research into hydrofracking and an independent review by the EPA.
  • Judy’s next big environmental project will be to introduce plastic bag legislation this coming fall.
